South Dakota has quite a famous history!

The Verendrye brothers left a lead plate near present day Fort Pierre, SD, that was inscribed with their names, the name of the Governor of New France, and the year, 1743. The plate was found by schoolchildren in 1913 and is now on display at a museum in Pierre, South Dakota.

The Lewis and Clark Expedition, The Corps of Discovery, followed the Missouri River through South Dakota. Lewis and Clark met with the Yankton Sioux, the Lakota Sioux, the Arikara, and the Mandan tribes during their time in what would become South Dakota.

Fur trading was the dominant activity in the 1830's. Settlement of the Dakota Territory by Americans and Europeans was increasing.

Discovery of Gold in the Black Hills in 1874 by the Black Hills Expedition led by George A. Custer led to war with the Sioux Indians who had refused to grant mining rights or land in the Black Hills to the US.

South Dakota was formally admitted to the Union on November 2, 1889.

One of the more famous armed conflicts between the US and the Sioux Nation was the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29, 1890 on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. The Wounded Knee Massacre is considered the last major armed conflict between the United States and the Sioux Nation.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial was carved from October 4, 1927 to October 31, 1941 in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Today, Mount Rushmore attracts over 2,000,000 visitors each year.
