The Brazilian people was formed over five centuries by waves of immigrants, added to the native population. The population consists mainly of three ethnic groups: Indian, black and white. Amerindians, people autóctenes are present in Brazil for about ten thousand years. In the Age of Discovery were estimated around five million people, spread throughout the Brazilian territory. Whites were led by Portuguese colonizers in the country since the sixteenth century. Until 1822, only the Portuguese had the right to immigrate to Brazil, but after independence was joined other European nations during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The largest flow was composed of Italians and Portuguese again, followed by Germans, Spaniards, etc.. Blacks were brought as slaves from the sixteenth century until the mid-nineteenth century.
