The Puritans first came here because the wanted to be much stricter on the rules of England, though they were not against them. In fact, they only wanted to enforce them. Then, a second group of Puritans (who were with the first group), led by John Winthrop, came and joined the first group. Among them was a man called Roger Williams. He disagreed harshly with the Puritans, and was expelled from Massachusetts Colony. He later led his own group of Puritans to find religious freedom. Later, Anne Hutchinson joined him, and together they founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony, which later became part of Rhode Island.
