King Kamehameha conquered and unified the islands with his heirs as the Kingdom of Hawaii until 1893 when the Monarchy was overthrown by wealthy American business owners and planters. The Republic of Hawaii lasted until 1894 when Hawaii was annexed by Act of Congress and became the Territory of Hawaii. In 1959 Hawaii was granted statehood.

Since becoming a US State there have been six Governors with four as Democrats and the first and current Governor Linda Lingle whose term expires in December of 2010 as Republicans. The Third Governor, George Ariyoshi (D) was of Japanese descent, John Waihee III (D) was a Native Hawaiian and Ben Cayetano (D) was of Filppino descent.

The State Government has a bicameral Legislature with 25 State Senators and 51 members of the House of Representatives and there is an independent Judiciary that is headed by a five member Supreme Court.
