They are generally the same size (Canada is only about 100,000 km2 larger). They also share many physical features, including many mountains, rivers, lakes, plains, etc. They generally have the same climate in certain areas (Southern Canada and Northern Contiguous US). They also share the longest border of any two nations. Secondly, economics. Canada has grown in parallel to the United States, as the US has sort of mentored Canada. The US has the largest economy and is about 7.5 times larger than Canada's, although Canada has the 10th largest economy.
