It is said that construction of the wall began early in the morning, on 13th August 1961, and took just 24 hours to complete. The original 'wall' was actually a barbed-wire topped fence. Over the next 14 years more fortified additions were made until the final larger and stronger concrete wall was constructed in 1975.
