Two main ambitions may be said to have caused Japan to become involved in World War II. The first was the ambition to be economically independent or, at least, richer in Natural Resources, especially oil and various metals important for Japan's industry. The second was a matter of national pride: Japan felt very keenly the ambition to stand on equal, even superior, terms with western nations, particularly the United States.
