Nativity scenes or "Christmas cribs" (known as presepi in Italian) are the primary symbol of Christmas in Italy. They are much more elaborate than what most people might think. They might include lakes, grottoes, rivers, "lights of Bethlehem" in the background, angels, etc. The most beautiful and ornate presepi are in churches, and crowds of people go from church to church in order to see them all.

Secondary Christmas decorations in Italy include candles, glass bulbs, stars, and even Santa Claus.
