The Apenines mountain range runs the whole length of the coutry from close to the top to all the way to the bottom. There are lots of mountains over the 2000m range and run close to 3000m even. The apenines join up with the Alpes Maritimes (of France) which then then create an encircling of the only substantial plains in Italy..the area between Turin, Milan and over to Venice and down as far south to Rimini.
Part of this enclirling mountain range is the Italian side of the French Alps, which is called the Dolomite, with peaks up to 4000m.
Basically Italy is a very mountainous country, except for a sliver of coastline running the whole way around it, and 'the basin' or bowl shape of the farmland in the North beyond the Apenines.
