A colony is a region under full or partial control of a Mother nation (typically a distant one), and occupied by settlers of that nation. There were so many colonies in Africa because Africa was full of important resources (ivory, gems, metals, etc). There was also the fact that Empires were looking to outdo each other, so they colonized Africa quite quickly.
