Advantages

- Profitability

- Moves passengers from short-distance flights and car journeys over to a far more eco-friendly method of transport

- Reduces carbon emissions and oil dependence

- Will cost less than rebuilding airports to handle the same amount of passengers

- Connects city centres

- Competitive journey times. Especially when you factor it the time it takes to drive to an airport and get through security

- Rise in congestion and pressure on airports

- Is becoming the 'way forward', especially in Europe and China

- Economic benefits to cities. Many areas around the new stations will see plenty of redevelopment

- 2.5 hours from San Francisco to LA? Yes please

- Jobs created

- Support

Disadvantages

- Railways are cheaper than freeways but still expensive

- Generates local car journeys in cities

- Fares prices may cost more than equivalent airline tickets

- Concerns over safety requirements (more of an obstacle than a disadvantage)

- Electricity for trains still has to be generated somehow

- We assume the people in charge have done their maths homework, but there's always a chance the whole thing is a financial disaster

- Don't think the airline companies will be too happy about it

- Local opposition due to noise, road traffic, etc
