Panama broke away from Colombia in 1903. The separation was influenced by U.S. interests in building a canal across the Isthmus of Panama. Following the Declaration of Independence, the United States quickly recognized Panama and subsequently signed a treaty to construct the Panama Canal.
The region was settled by the Spanish in the 16th Century but broke away 1821. Panama joined a union with Venezuela and Ecuador called the Republic of Gran Colombia. This was dissolved in 1831. Panama ceded from Colombia in 1903 allowing the Panama Canal to be built between 1904 and 1914 by the US Corps of Engineers and others. The Canal transferred from the US to Panama by the end of the 20th Century
