Douglas Island is within the borough of Juneau, however downtown Juneau as well as a good long stretch locals call the valley and "out the road" are all located on the mainland of North America, about 15 miles over the glacier fields to Canada. It can feel like an island, though, because there are no roads connecting Juneau to any other cities. The only way to arrive there is by plane or by boat.
