Andy Veliz, a school principal from Weslaco, Texas became famous for attaining a hit record in the summer of 1980.

His song "Lonely Nights Without You" reach to # 1 status in 1980 when he was on tour and ended his tour in Dallas, Texas.

Veliz wrote his hit song when he was coming home from a gig in Brownsville, Texas. He stated that his song just came to him that night.

He recorded it in Weslaco, Texas with his longtime manager Joe A. Leal of MP Recording studios.

Upon its release, it became a hit in the Rio Grande Valley, an area close to the Mexican border. From there, the song received heavy airplay throughout the state of Texas and he went on tour.

After his touring, he continued his position as a principal in the Weslaco School Independent District.

He still performs in weddings and sings in functions throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

In 2001, he retired from principalship duties in Donna ISD and is now an adjunct professor at the University of Texas - Pan American in Edingburg, Texas.
