The Roanoke Island colony was led by John White, who was appointed by Sir Walter Raleigh. John White served as the governor of the colony, which later became known as the Lost Colony due to its mysterious disappearance.
Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe led the expedition that landed on Roanoke Island. They were dispatched by Sir Walter Raleigh who had been commissioned by Queen Elizabeth I to establish a colony in North America.
Sir Walter Raleigh financed the first Roanoke settlement with Ralph Lane and Richard Grenville leading the expedition. John White commanded the second attempt to establish a colony on Roanoke Island. .

Raleigh's first colonists, led by John White, landed on Roanoke Island in 1587.
Walter Raleigh sent John White to Roanoke to establish a settlement for the English in the New World. White's task was to lead the group of colonists, oversee the establishment of a permanent settlement, and strengthen England's claim to the land.
The Roanoke Colony had landed on Roanoke Island for strange reasons. Their settlement president, John White, had to take a ship back to England to gather provisions. Sadly a war arose between England and Spain and White could not return to Roanoke for 3 years. when he returned all the settlers had disappeared, leaving one trace of where they could be, a sign that said "CROATONE". After reading this White sailed to Croatone Island not far away from Roanoke, but sadly there was no trace of the settler's. White sailed back to England defeated. Modern studies show that Sir Walter Raleigh, Queen Elizabeth's most trusted adviser, was framed by competing adviser's. They thought that if the settlers landed in Roanoke, Raleigh's reputation would be destroyed and he would be hanged for the murder of 117 children,women,and men. Though Raleigh was not killed, 117 people did.

Ralegh's settlement in what is now North Carolina was on Roanoke Island. It became known as 'the lost colony'. It was designated the Cittie of Ralegh, but the name never quite took hold because the colony failed.
