President Lincoln was a remarkable human being. He grew up as a poor farmer, trained and practiced as a lawyer, became an able and astute politician and stood successfully for president. In his role as president he effectively had to take charge of the military in a civil war (because of the incompetence of his generals) and held the Union of the United States of America together through its time of greatest testing.

Perhaps his greatest contribution was the abolition of slavery in the United States. The United states lagged significantly behind the majority of the word in abolishing slavery (despite the words of the Declaration of Independence on which it was founded). Lincoln was at heart an abolitionist but a very fair man, he would have compensated the southern slave owners to free the slaves. In the end he abolished slavery by Presidential edict as a war policy rather than the open humanitarian decision that the United States should have made.

Finally one must pass comment on Lincolns ability to use language, his legal skills and exposure to Shakespeare (and his own genius) allowed him to pen the Gettysburg Address, which although not noted particularly at the time it was given, changed the whole direction of the civil war and stands as a world class pinnacle of oratory for generations to come. No matter what your citizenship reading the Address moves your spirit towards good. (The next time these heights were reach in the US was Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech given from the Lincoln memorial, when the US finally moved towards practicing the "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." declaration that they gave the world.)
