Brigham Young was the leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) for about 30 years. Brigham had talent as a strong leader and community organizer. He was able get tens of thousands of oppressed and poor people moved across the country into what was then Mexico and established unified settlements in a wild, mostly uninhabited land. Here he established a government, a monetary system, a new written language, a school system, a goods production and distribution system, cities, roads, and a communications infrastructure for these tens of thousands, completely independent of any governmental assistance and all while being their religious leader. His formal career training was to be a simple New England carpenter.
