Both Kenya & Zimbabwe (Formerly Southern Rhodesia) were part of the British Empire. Both Egypt & Sudan were British protectorates within the British Empire. Keyna is a member of the Commonwealth, but I think Zimbabwe is probably now suspended in these troubled times.

It was known as the British Empire. When the empire started to fall apart, the British Commonwealth/Commonwealth of Nations was created.
They wanted it because they wanted to expand they're Empire.

There have been a few different Self-governing colonies in the British Empire. One that comes to mind is Southern Rhodesia, known today as Zimbabwe.
