Feudalism is ordered as follows. First the peasants produce goods, then the knights protect and extort the peasants, and finally the nobility and clergy survive off collections made by the knights.
Feudalism appeared in its complete form in Europe around the 9th and 10th centuries. During this time, feudal relationships became fully established, with the king or monarch at the top of the social hierarchy and the nobles, clergy, and peasants below, each owing economic and military obligations to those above them. Feudalism continued to evolve and exist in different forms throughout the Middle Ages.
The three primary classes of feudalism are the nobility, clergy, and peasantry. The nobility, including lords and knights, held land and power, offering protection to those beneath them in exchange for service. The clergy, consisting of church officials, played a significant role in spiritual leadership and often owned land, influencing both society and politics. The peasantry, or serfs, worked the land and provided labor, receiving protection and sustenance in return, but often had limited rights and freedoms.
