Everything they wore was homemade There were no stores to buy stuff in. There was also no restaurants. When they got off the ships from Europe they had to hunt for food and make their own clothing. It was a very rough life. Think about it. They left family behind and basically took as little as they could with them. And when they got here they had almost nothing to start with.
