What do Americans think of Australians?

We think that there great!!!!!!!!! I have NEVER heard anyone say that they don't like Australians. I think that there really really really great!!! I wish I was Australian. But what I'm wondering is what do Australians think of Americans??? Could you please awnser that question!

We think they are cool!!!! and fun!! I really want to go to America and see the sights!! I think they're incredible!!!!

Australians regard Americans the same way they do other nationalities: they are equals in regard to wealth, freedoms (some more freedoms in Australia, and some less - for example, fewer problems in Australia with praying in schools - no official laws against any kind of prayers in most schools here) and education.

Australians also are led in many ways by American culture, as the American influence is strong in television, movies and the entertainment and media industry generally. Perhaps some Australians mourn the loss of some of their 'traditional' culture and identity as the American influence has increased since the advent of television.

However, many Australians, like all people of all lands, have a unique love of their own country and, while many Australians believe America is a great country, and an interesting place to visit, they have no specific desire to live there.

I live in Australia, and thought this question would be so simple to answer. I asked my youngest son, 'What do you think of Americans?' and then I had to say, 'Watch the road!' because he'd turned to stare at me. He asked did I also want to know what he thought of front doors, or rivers, or cupboards, or bread, or Californian girls?

Of course, he's engaged to a girl from San Diego.

At the supermarket I asked the checkout operator and she said much the same as the first contributor's answer, above. She's saving for a trip to the US and can't wait to visit. We passed our doctor, who's just back from New York, so I asked him, and he looked at me the way my son had. He said, 'That's like asking what do Canadians think of Corsicans.'

After a few more tries I've gained the impression some people who haven't been outside Australia much see the question as 'What do you think of America (as a country)?', while some who've traveled more tend to take it as asked: 'What do you think of Americans (as individuals)?'

I can only speak for myself. I've American friends, and I've probably met several hundred Americans, which only leaves a few hundred million Americans I've yet to meet. I've generally found Americans to be nice people, apart from a few, memorably one who pointed to a giant goanna (lizard) and said they should all be exterminated, but didn't know why; just that they should die. I've never known another American say anything remotely like that, though some Australians kill the wildlife here for fun.

I expect most of the Americans I haven't met are nice or otherwise in the same proportions as all people everywhere, and all the Australians I've asked since I first saw this question have said much the same, for what my little survey is worth.

As with every nationality's view of other nationalities, there will always be those who simply think of people from a particular country as they see them depicted in the media, or in travelers' tales; this is quite normal.
