In their natural habitat in Australia, budgies feed on the seeds and leaves of native grasses. They enjoy native flowers and thistle flowers, and nibble on the bark and branches of trees to help keep their beaks short. They also enjoy the leaves, flowers and bark of eucalyptus trees.

Pet budgies should be given commercial Small Bird seed mix; fruit (not too much and only every few days or they get diarrhoea); raw vegetables such as carrot and lettuce and other leafy greens in small amounts and only every few days; honey bells and other commercial bird seed treats; sprouted seeds and millet.

Oats are good for winter because it helps them get some extra fat for when it gets cold - but be careful as you do not want your budgie to get fat. You can also try giving them small pieces of whole grain bread and even wheat cereals but make sure you don't give them too much.

All budgies should have grit mixed in their food. Grit contains oyster shells, finely ground eggshell, charcoal, calcium, mineralised lime, and cuttlebone. Possible treats include papaya/pawpaw, apples, mangoes, and bananas.

Do NOT feed your budgie avocado or sugary foods like chocolate, both of which can be poisonous to budgies.
