What do the colours on the Sydney flag mean?

Strange though it may seem, there is no special meaning attached to the New South Wales flag, which includes the Union Jack and the NSW badge. When the design was originally submitted to London for approval, no meaning of the design was given.

The English flag in the top-centre of the Sydney flag (white with red cross) symbolises the English foundation of the colony.

The globe and two stars on the cross represent the arms of Captain James Cook - an English explorer.

The blue flag in the left of the Sydney flag is the coat of arms of Thomas Townshend, Viscount Sydney. The man who the city was named after.

The red flag in the top right is the coat of arms for the Lord Mayor of Sydney.

The ship, blue and gold in the centre of the flag represents Sydney being a maritime port.

The blue is the sea and the gold is the horizon.
