Well I think there were two reasons. First: the Spanish conquered South America and some Indians or indigenous peoples died in the battles, Second: the Spanish used the local natives as slaves and worked them hard, probably working some to death. Third: Unknown to the Spaniards they had brought diseases with them. These diseases were common in Europe and everybody there had built up immunity to them through exposure to them, but the natives weren't used to these sicknesses, so many natives died of the new diseases, catching them and dying.
