The Polynesian culture flourishes equally well in both Samoa and in the territory of American Samoa. Western Samoa as Samoa was once named exhibits a more cosmopolitan flavor. It was discovered by the French, it was administered by the Germans and after WW-1 it was managed by New Zealand. Each nation left it's mark on this island nation. American Samoa was blessed or cursed with a world class bay that was a frequent Port of Call for US naval vessels and it absorbed the worst and the best that it was offered.
