Alba is the Scots Gaelic name for Scotland.

Originally an Indo-European word for "white" used in Ptolemy's texts, the word came to be used to describe the kingdoms of the Picts north of the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde, traditionally regarded to have been conquered by Kenneth MacAlpin.
