A small band of settlers issued a proclamation on June 14, 1846 declaring California to be a Republic independent of Mexico. They designed a flag depicting a grizzly bear and five-pointed star over a red bar with the word "California Republic". Their revolt came to be known as the Bear Flag Revolt. The grizzly was a symbol of strength while the lone star was a homage to the lone star of Texas. The flag was taken down on July 9, 1846 when the settlers learned Mexico and the US were at war. The flag was adopted as California's state flag by the State Legislature of California in 1911.
The same way it does today. It hasn't changed since 1850.
