Hernán Cortés fought and defeated the Aztec Empire, which was a powerful native tribe in Mexico. In 1519, he led an expedition that ultimately resulted in the fall of Tenochtitlán, the Aztec capital, in 1521. The conquest was marked by alliances with other indigenous groups who opposed the Aztecs, as well as significant military engagements and the impact of European diseases. This conquest led to the establishment of Spanish colonial rule in Mexico.
