The goal of the Vietnam War was to stop the spread of communism. As such, the US felt the need to stop the influence of communist North Vietnam, which entailed supporting South Vietnam in any way possible.
The people of the United States came to feel that the war in Vietnam was unjustified. President Nixon withdrew troops and the North Vietnamese aided by China took over South Vietnam.

They lost their purpose in life.
After the diseaster at Dien Bien Phu, the French felt that they can no longer hold Vietnam and that French lives are not worth an unprofitable colony. A treaty was signed at the Geneva conference, where free elections was set for a certain date. At that point French didn't really care what happened, they didn't buy American cracked-pot Domino theory. So a few years after, when Diem "president" of the south Vietnam reneged on the unifying election of north and south knowing he would lose a popular election, and the US had to increasing prop up his weak regime, the French couldn't have cared one way or another. They were essentially done with the region.
