The goal of the Vietnam War was to stop the spread of communism. As such, the US felt the need to stop the influence of communist North Vietnam, which entailed supporting South Vietnam in any way possible.
The same as American, Vietnamese, New Zealander, South Korean, Thailand, Philippine, and Communist mothers.
They were worried about being drafted!
The people of the United States came to feel that the war in Vietnam was unjustified. President Nixon withdrew troops and the North Vietnamese aided by China took over South Vietnam.
The south was agriculturally heavy, so they needed someone to do the hard work. The north was focused much more on industrial type jobs, which did not need slaves.
