On January 10, 1901, Texas had its first oil gush, setting off the Texas Oil Boom. This occurred at Spindletop Hill. The search for oil was lead by Pattillo Higgins and Anthony F. Lucas. What is known as the Lucas Gusher or Lucas Geyser blew oil over 150 feet at the rate of 4,200,000 gallons per day. This is the largest gusher that the world has ever seen.

Also in 1901, a bill was passed by the Democratic-dominated state legislature that required payment of a poll tax for voting, which disenfranchised most blacks, many poor whites, and Latinos. The state legislature also initiated "white primaries", which ensured that minorities were excluded from the formal political process.
