Paul was a prisoner on a ship which was wrecked off the coast of Malta. His life was spared when a soldier wanted to save him rather than kill the prisoners as ordered. Once on land, Paul was bitten by a viper which emerged from a campfire but suffered no ill effects, prompting the inhabitants to falsely assume he was a god. Whilst on the island for several months, Paul performed a ministry of healing to the sick.
