Serviceable equipment was incorporated in the former North Vietnamese Air Force, Army and Navy. Samples of some equipment were placed in museums; some may have left in remote regions; the balance has been re-cycled (scrapped). 21st Century tourists have photograhed 3 ex-USN Swift Boats moored together near a certain village. It was unclear whether the PCF's were in military use or civilian use (as fishing boats); they appeared to be still in their military colors, but showed much weathering.

With no artillery shells to feed their cannons; with no fuel to feed their jets; etc. etc. the South was defeated by the on-rushing NVA in April 1975. US Congress had cut off the money to send ammo & fuel to RVN. The US Military left jets, tanks, artillery, etc. in RVN...but they're pretty worthless with-out gas and ammo!

How did the Vietnam war affect south Vietnam?

The economic activity which was mostly controlled by private enterprise virtually collapsed after the fall of Saigon. A mass exodus of brain power and capital left with the lights on, so to speak. Those who were left behind became wardens of the state and if they had any connection to the former government or the US military they were sent to re-education camps for several years. When this happened many of the most impressive real estate properties were taken over by the troops of the Northern Vietnamese. They remain the largest landholders to this day throughout Vietnam.
