Ultimately, the ship was captured by the Spanish in 1522, and its crew was forced to abandon it. The Trinidad never completed its journey back to Spain, and it was later lost at sea.

The flagship of Ferdinand Magellan's expedition, the caravel Trinidad, was captured by the Portuguese in the Maluku Islands (Moluccas) and sailed to Ternate Island, where the sails and rigging were removed. The vessel eventually sank there after a storm broke it up.
When Ferdinand Magellan traveled to the Philippine archipelago with a fleet of five ships provided by King Charles V. Magellan commanded the flagship christened the Trinidad.
