What happened to the crusaders on their journey to Jerusalem?

Jerusalem was the Holy City of Christendom, the reacquisition of which was the purpose of the Pope's authorizing the Crusades against the Moslems. Control over Jerusalem and battles to defend and overrun it were very important in the Early Crusades.

Yes. They did with 60,000 crusaders followed by another 100,000. Also traveling with them were their families and peasants. Their first battle with the Muslin was not at Jerusalem but at Tatin - northwest of Jerusalem. After their victory at the Tatin, they marched in Jerusalem and had a blood bath where they literally killed most Muslin and Jews who were living there. Eye witness recalled that after this final battle, they walked around like butcher: covered in blood. The rest of Muslins which were not killed were kicked out of Jerusalem. The city was cleared all of Muslin and Jews. Most of the Crusaders returned home to Europe. They, however, did not destroy non-Catholic temples. Crusaders ruled Jerusalem for a long time from 11th century until 1187 when Saladin, a Kurdish Muslin, defeated them and took over Jerusalem. Where he created a system of sharing that still exists to this day: eastern catholic, African Catholic and Latin Catholic shares the same church with the actual key to the church held by 2 neutral families who are Muslin. These same 2 families are still hold these keys - in the last 840 years - when the key was passed from fathers to sons, generations after generations.

The Crusaders entered Jerusalem and killed everyone they met, going into houses and dragging out inhabitants to kill them. The Crusaders also set the Jews's synagogue on fire, killing everyone who was hiding inside. Jerusalem fell to the Crusaders in the end.
