After the German surrender in May 1945 the Allies took over the running of Germany, which was divided into four zones - British, French, US and Soviet. Berlin (which was geographically deep inside the Soviet Zone) was divided into four sectors - one for each of the occupying powers. Most of Germany east of the Oder and Neisse rivers was given to Poland, except for the northern part of East Prussia, which became part of the USSR. Many parts of Germany were in a state of chaos by then, so it took quite a while to get the country moving again. egg
