The U.S. has four main time zones. From west to east, they are: Pacific Time, Mountain Time, Central Time and Eastern Time. Each is one hour later than the last. So, if it's 8 PM Pacific Time, then it's 9 PM Mountain Time, 10 PM Central Time and 11 PM Eastern Time.

The majority of New Zealand is 20 hours ahead of Pacific Time, 19 hours ahead of Mountain Time, 18 hours ahead of Central Time and 17 hours ahead of Eastern Time.

The exception to this is the Chatham Islands, which are 20 hours and 45 minutes ahead of Pacific Time, 19 hours and 45 minutes ahead of Mountain Time, 18 hours and 45 minutes ahead of Central Time and 17 hours and 45 minutes ahead of Eastern Time.

Making things more confusing is the fact that New Zealand is on Daylight Savings Time when the U.S. is not, and the U.S. is on Daylight Savings Time when New Zealand is not.

So, during the middle of the year (approximately March/April through September/November) New Zealand is 19 hours ahead of Pacific Daylight Time, 18 hours ahead of Mountain Daylight Time, 17 hours ahead of Central Daylight Time and 16 hours ahead of Eastern Daylight Time.

During the rest of the year (approximately September/November to March/April) New Zealand is 21 hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time, 20 hours ahead of Mountain Standard Time, 19 hours ahead of Central Standard Time and 18 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time.

So, currently (July), 8 PM Tuesday PDT is 3 PM Wednesday in mainland New Zealand. 9 PM Tuesday MDT is 3 PM Wednesday in mainland New Zealand. 10 PM Tuesday CDT is 3 PM Wednesday in mainland New Zealand. 11 PM Tuesday EDT is 3 PM Wednesday in mainland New Zealand.

In, say, December, 6 PM Tuesday PST is 3 PM Wednesday in mainland New Zealand. 7 PM Tuesday MST is 3 PM Wednesday in mainland New Zealand. 8 PM Tuesday CST is 3 PM Wednesday in mainland New Zealand. 9 PM Tuesday EST is 3 PM Wednesday in mainland New Zealand.

You would subtract 45 minutes from all of those U.S. times, to get the time difference between the U.S. and New Zealand's Chatham Islands.

When New Zealand is on Standard Time, Queensland (UTC+10) is 2 hours behind New Zealand (UTC+12/UTC+13).When New Zealand is on Daylight Saving Time, Queensland is 3 hours behind New Zealand. In New Zealand, Daylight Saving Time begins on the last Sunday of September and ends on the 1st Sunday of April. So when it's 8 PM EST in Queensland, the time in New Zealand is either 10 PM NZST (during Standard Time) or 11 PM NZDT (during Daylight Saving Time).

What is the difference between Pacific time and New Zealand time?

Were it not for Daylight Savings Time, New Zealand would be 20 hours ahead of Pacific Time. But New Zealand is on Daylight Savings Time when the U.S. is not, and the U.S. is on Daylight Savings Time when New Zealand is not (except for the few weeks when both are on Daylight Savings or Standard Time). So, during the middle of the year (approximately March/April through September/November) New Zealand is 19 hours ahead of Pacific Daylight Time. During the rest of the year (approximately September/November through March/April), New Zealand is 21 hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time. From September 26 (when New Zealand begins Daylight Savings) to November 7 (when New York ends Daylight Savings), and from March 14 (when Daylight Savings begins in New York) to April 4 (when it ends in New Zealand), New Zealand is 17 hours ahead of New York. Also, New Zealand's Chatham Islands are 45 minutes ahead of the mainland. So the Chatham Islands are 19 hours and 45 minutes ahead of the Pacific Time Zone during the middle of the year, 21 hours and 45 minutes ahead of the Pacific Time Zone during the rest of the year, and 20 hours and 45 minutes ahead during the few weeks when both places are on Daylight Savings or Standard Time. So, in December, if it's 6 PM on Friday in California, it's 3 PM on Saturday in mainland New Zealand. In July, if it's 6 PM Friday in California, then it's 1 PM Saturday in mainland New Zealand. From September 26 to November 7, if it's 6 PM Friday in California, it's 2 PM Saturday in mainland New Zealand. Also, from March 14 to April 4, if it's 6 PM Friday in California, it's 2 PM Saturday in mainland New Zealand.
