Jamaica is a special country for many reasons. Historically, it formed the hub of the British Empire in the Caribbean from they took it from the Spanish in 1655. It then became the largest British possession in the Caribbean and was developed into a valuable possession, supplying large quantities of sugar and making many British merchants quite rich. The country became quite developed and civilized along British lines and had a high standard of law and medicine, out of proportion to its size, and had a robust parliamentary system. Many firsts were established in the island by the British, e.g. as noted in Wikipedia - "The Railways of Jamaica, constructed from 1845, were the first railway lines opened to traffic outside Europe and North America, and the second British Colony after Canada's Champlain and St. Lawrence Railroad of 1836 to receive a railway system.[1][2] Construction started only twenty years after George Stephenson's Stockton and Darlington Railway commenced operations in the United Kingdom. These and many other important "firsts" established Jamaica as a country of influence far beyond its size. Its strategic position close to Cuba and the Florida coast made it even more important in the time of the USA-Russia cold war. The ethnic mix of the country and the spirit of the people have gelled over time to produce a dynamic, creative, cultural, intelligent ad athletic unique population that has influenced and impacted on the whole world in a way that is totally out of keeping with the relatively small size and population. Examples include music...Jamaica invented ska, which morphed into rocksteady, into reggae into dancehall. Names like Bob Marley, the rest of the Marley family, Peter Tosh, and more recently Beenie Man and so on are known world wide. Jamaica has been winning gold medals in the Olympics from the 1950s, often outperforming much larger countries in Track and Field, e.g. Herb McKenley, Donald Quarrie, Merlene Ottey, veronica Campbell, Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt. Jamaica nurses, doctors and other professionals are well represented and highly respected world wide. Our great thinkers like Marcus Garvey influenced black power movements worldwide. As for the tourism product and the food - legendary! The beaches, the fun spots, e.g. MOntego Bay, Ocho Rios, Negril...the unique cuisine - curried goat, jerk pork, escoveitched fish and bammy, ackee and salt fish etc. The influence of the Rastafarian movement which began in Jamaican is beyond question.
