The ancient name of the territory, 2 000 years ago was Dacia.

In the XIXth century for a short period of time (1859-1866) the official name was Principatele Unite ale Moldovei și Țării Românești.

The official name România is from 1866.

During the communist period the names were: Republica Populară Română and after Republica Socialistă Română.

Provinces:

The today province Muntenia had also other names: Valahia, Ţara Românească.

Another name of Transylvania was Ardeal.

An alternate name for Moldova was Ţara Moldovei.

Vallachia, Moldavia, Transylvania. These three regions were distinct states (principalities), ruled by a prince called "Voda". Nowadays, Moldavia is divided between the namesake region of Romania and the ex-USSR state of Moldova.
