Some of them would be:

  • Competitiveness: Competing against other emerging markets (South Africa, Turkey, Indonesia, China, India) for economic opportunities, markets and foreign investment from developed countries.
  • Security: Many countries in the area have a high crime rate and a general sense of insecurity. Of special importance is the "War on Drugs" which is affecting Mexico, Central America and Colombia. Also, inadequate funding has allowed for high levels of corruption among police and armed forces, specially when dealing against drug cartels.
  • Education: Lack of education for most of the population. Even 'advanced' economies such as Chile and Argentina are having a hard time improving the education of their citizens. For example, only 13 universities in the region are ranked along the top 1000 of best universities around the world.
  • Economy: World economic bust is keeping a depressed economy: the high dependence on foreign markets as receiver of exports as well as source of hard currencies have impacted negatively on the Latin American economy.
  • Poverty: Although Latin America is a regional leader in hunger reduction, there is still a high prevalence of malnutrition; according to the United Nations Development Programme, more than 30% Latin Americans are below the poverty line.
