What is happening with Georgia and Russia?

In early August 2008, the Georgian government moved in forces to reclaim the self declared autonomous state of South Osseitia.

In response to this the Russian government moved in its forces to defend the "rights and freedoms of the thousands of Russian citizens at risk."

The Russian Military Forces were far superior to the Georgians and fearing the wrath of Russia; the Georgian army pulled back into its own country to defend itself against a full scale Russian invasion.

The Russians have gone above and beyond the defence of their citizens by invading the sovereignty of the Georgian state, most sources agree that this is revenge for a rapidly westernising Georgia.

Not helping the situation at the moment is the precarious situation with another break away Georgian Region of Abkhazia - which is sending its own forces to the assitance of South Osseitia

The "hiden" reason for this war is the BP gas pipeline that bypasses "trigger happy" Russia, byt travelling through Georgia.

The reason for this pipeline was to avoid Russia being able to control all of the gas supplies to Europe and cut supplies when Russia doesnt get what Russia wants.

So it would seem that the Russian fundng of the break away regions of Georgia was simply to act as an excuse for Russia to seize control of its southern neighbour.
