The traditional pattern is:

  1. A fairly light breakfast, taken early in the day, consisting of coffee/tea with a hearty bread roll (called a Brotchen, usually with butter, margarine, Nutella, or preserves), a cup of yogurt ( called Joeghurt, usually plain, with pieces of fruit mixed in, such as apples or Pears), and/or Mueslix (a hearty rolled grain cereal, mixed with fruit and nuts, sometimes spices, and a splash of milk).
  2. A second breakfast, consisting of a glass of juice, or tea, and a something small, but hearty, such as a slice of Pizza, a sandwich, or a sausage & roll (Wurst & Brotchen)
  3. Lunch as the main meal, consisting of meat, fish or vegetables, with potatoes, boiled in a brine, served with a sprinkling of parsley, and a chopped salad. Green salads normally consist of wild greens, not iceberg lettuce, with onion, carrot, tomato, and various light, flavorful dressings (usually a vinaigrette or in some cases, a yogurt & herb dressing, similar to ranch dressing, but lighter)
  4. A cold supper, taken usually around 8-9 p.m. and consisting of cold meat and/or cheese, and fruit, served with beer, wine or milk, and usually served at home.
