Southside Virginia is generally described as the southern part of the Virginia piedmont; specifically, the region west of the Tidewater, east of the Blue Ridge and south of the James River. It is mostly rural, conservative and struggling economically. In addition to the decline in demand for the southside's staple crop, tobacco, once prominent manufacturing industries such as textiles, apparel and furniture have largely gone offshore.
