Anatolia was not united prior to the Roman Empire and the later Eastern Roman Empire around 2000 years ago. There were many different cities that were capitals of smaller states in Anatolia in earlier ancient times, but there was no "capital of Turkey" because the Anatolian peninsula was not under one authority. All of Turkey was ruled from the city of Byzantium whose name changed to Constantinople and again to Istanbul.

It would not be united again until the Ottoman period, which began in 1299. The Ottoman capital started in Bursa, moved to Edirne (Adrianopole), and then moved to Istanbul (Constantinople/Byzantium).
