What is the average climate of the US?

Since the US covers such a large area, you cannot describe the climate so simply. There are numerous climate zones in the US. The largest climate zones include semiarid, continental, subtropical, subarctic, Mediterranean, and tropical.

Semiarid:

A climate that is intermediate between desert and humid. It's not as dry as a desert climate, but is not as wet as a humid climate. This climate is mostly found in the inland Western USA, in states such as Idaho, Utah, and Colorado.

Continental:

There are two main continental climates in the USA: one with a warm summer and one with a cool summer. Generally, a continental climate has obvious contrasting seasons, meaning a cold winter and a warm summer. The continental cool summer is found in the Northern Contiguous USA in states such as Minnesota, Michigan, and Maine. The continental warm summer is found just below the cool summer climate zone, in states such as New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

Subtropical:

A subtropical climate is very humid and receives lots of precipitation. It also has very humid, hot summers and mild to cool winters. This climate is found mainly in the Southeastern USA in states such as Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

Subarctic:

A subarctic climate is described as long, cold winters and short, cool to mild summers. It is found solely in Alaska, but since Alaska is so huge, it perhaps covers the largest area of the USA.

Mediterranean:

A Mediterranean climate is defined as warm to hot summers and cool to mild winters. Typically, it never drops below 60˚F. This climate is found along the Pacific coast of the Contiguous USA, and mainly engulfs the state of California.

Tropical:

A tropical climate basically has the same temperature year round, usually warm and humid (average daily temperature is about 75˚F). It rains practically year round as well. Tropical climates can be found in Hawaii and the southern tip of Florida.
