The area has many aspects of the Great Plains and its ecosystems. The topograhy is largely prairie and the region has much of the plant and animal life associated with the inland prairies of North America. Heartier plants and animals which can tolerate hot summers and long periods of little to no rain are especially favored. The culture also has many aspects of the Plains, especially in the Dallas-Ft Worth-Arlington metro region which is last reported to be 6.7 Million (circa 2012) and growing. Over the past several decades numbers of people from places like Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, the Dakotas, Wyoming and Montana have relocated to the area. In more recent times, other areas of the Midwest, Northeast and West Coast have been represenrted. Add to that, the high levels of immigrants attracted to the region due to its relatively healthy economy. The North Central texas region also has other influences from other sources: the early influence of Southern settlers mainly from far East Texas and places like Arkansas and Louisiana (a shrinking influence) and a growing influence of Latinos, mostly from Mexico, but also from Central and South America, and Asians (in the DFW region proper) from both South and East Asia are also changing the culture of the area.
