Governor Lingle was born in St. Louis, Missouri, raised and educated in California and she became Maui's first woman and youngest mayor as well as the first female Governor of the state.

As a footnote to Hawaii's Gubenetorial history, another name from Hawaiian politics should at least be mentioned because of his search for that office without success. Frank Francis Fasi, born in Hartford, Connecticut and the longest serving Mayor of Honolulu. He ran against Ariyosha for Governor in 1974 and lost in the primary and ran against Ariyosha in the 1978 primary and lost. He ran in the 1982 General election and lost. He ran in 1994 and lost. He retired from politics at the age of 84 after losing the office of Mayor or Honolulu. He died in Honolulu in 2010 at the age of 89.
