It is unknown when Mexican food first came to Australia, but there are some facts about early Mexican restaurants in Australia:

• The founder of Taco Bill came to Australia in 1967. He began producing corn chips and tortillas, then opened the first Taco Bill retaurant on Queensland's Gold Coast in the early 1970s.
• In the capital city of Brisbane, Queensland, the first Mexican restaurant was Pepe's, which opened in Milton in 1972.
• The Montezuma's chain of Mexican restaurants began operating in 1978.
• Aztec Products was established in 1986. This was the first fully Australian-owned supplier of authentic Mexican food products in Austalia, and was started by a group of owners of Mexican rstaurants who were unhappy with the lack of authentic Mexican food products available in Australia.
