Among many reasons, Pennsylvania was the only colony to live up to its creed of religious tolerance during the colonial era as well as racial and ethnic tolerance relative to its time. Pennsylvania was also the site of most of the "firsts", as one may say, including the first post office in the u.s., the first hospital, the first medical school, the first women's medical school, the first children's hospital, the first true mental hospital, the first zoo, the first mint (where money is made), the first public library, the first organized fire department (though it was volunteer), the first insurance company, the first public water works, the first theatre, the first stock exchange, the first Thanksgiving day parade (1920 wanamaker's thanksgiving day parade with floats and all), the first reading of the declaration of independence (for obvious reasons) and the list goes on. Most of these things occurred in philadelphia, which was the hub of colonial America as well as the largest city in the colonies at the time.
