The only real way to remain safe in Jamaica is to stay at one of the all-inclusive resorts. They may provide bus excursions with guides to places outside of the resort. Generally these are pretty safe since the tour organizers are experienced and know how to avoid threats.

Negril is not the laid-back place it once was. If you are after drugs or prostitution, you will probably go there regardless, but know that the crime rate against tourists there is now one of the highest in the area. Expect harassment at the very minimum if you attempt to go anywhere without knowing what you are doing. Theft is rampant everywhere. It is almost a given that something will be stolen from you while you are in Jamaica.

Be aware that Jamaica has one of the highest murder rates in the world.
